• Event Details: Located in the Cailiao River area of Zuojhen District, Tainan City, it can be called the original hometown of Taiwan's fossils and a paradise for animals. The rise and fall of sea levels caused by the ice age cycle provided Taiwan with the opportunity to connect with Eurasia, attracting many terrestrial vertebrates. The main members of the "Zuojhen Fauna" include tigers, black bears, rhinoceroses, sabre-toothed elephants, deer, and buffalo, along with Taiwan macaques and golden monkeys, forming a diverse terrestrial ecosystem on Taiwan Island.

This aims to define Tainan City's distinct urban character, highlighting a novel context bridging over 400,000 years of natural ecology and cultural history.

    Hometown of Fossils, Paradise of Animals

    Located in the Cailiao River area of Zuojhen District, Tainan City, it can be called the original hometown of Taiwan's fossils and the paradise of animals. Since the Quaternary period, the rise and fall of sea level caused by the global ice age cycle, Taiwan has had the opportunity to attract many terrestrial vertebrates when it connected with Eurasia, thereby developing a diverse terrestrial ecosystem. Since the period of Japanese rule, there have been records on mammal fossils collected in the Cailiao River basin in Tainan, which started the history of research on mammal fossils in modern Taiwan. Most researchers agree that the mammal fossils in Cailiao River basin are an ancient fauna developing over a long period, and the characteristics of the mammal fossils can be traced back to the early Pleistocene about two million years ago when compared with those in China and Japan, or even back all the way to the Neolithic 20,000~30,000 years ago. Recent studies on fossil development and paleoenvironment of Nesorhinus hayasakai found in China show that it was produced in Ershuangxi Formation and dated from the middle Pleistocene between 900,000 and 450,000 years ago. At present, most paleontologists generally agree that the main mammal fauna in Cailiao River in Zuojhen area is dated from the middle Pleistocene. The main members of the "Zuojhen Fauna" include carnivorous animals such as tigers, black bears, and many small-sized carnivores, and herbivores represented by rhinoceroses, sabre-toothed elephants, deer, and buffalo, as well as Taiwan macaques and golden monkeys, featuring the characteristics of the fauna in South China. This composition of the "Zuojhen Fauna" shows the biological diversity of the ecosystem on Taiwan island in middle Pleistocene.

    About Lecture

    Prof. Chun-Hsiang Chang

    Doctor of Paleontology at the University of London, UK, and currently a research fellow in the Geology Section of the National Museum of Natural Science, and an adjunct professor at Taiwan University and Tunghai University. He is specialized in the research on the systematic classification and evolution of Quaternary mammals, and for a long period he has been studying the Pleistocene fauna of Taiwan, especially the fossils of Zuojhen fauna and Penghu fauna. He has also actively participated in the educational promotion and exhibition planning of earth science in a number of museums.

    The 2024 "New Prospect on the Paleontological Research in Taiwan" International Conference will be grandly held in Tainan in September. It aims to review the glorious history of Taiwan's paleontology research and the Cailiao River located in Zuojhen District, which has rich fossil archaeological resources and the profound connection between the field and paleontological research. We look forward to the future of paleontological research in Taiwan by this seminar.

    We sincerely invite scholars, fossil research enthusiasts, and young students in related fields from home and abroad to actively participate in this call for papers covering all aspects of paleontology research in Taiwan, and to participate in this academic feast together. Through interactions with scholars from domestic and international academic circles, we aim to promote academic exchange and collaboration, sparking new insights in the field of paleontological research.

    Papers should be written in the form of an abstract within 500 words, in either Chinese or English, and please include the title, publisher and affiliation.

    We look forward to the enthusiastic participation of all researchers and enthusiasts. We can together explore the changes in nature and cultural context across hundreds of thousands of years. While understanding the past, we also pursue the infinite possibilities of Taiwan’s paleontology research and shape it into an indispensable part of Tainan's unique cultural landscape.

    Novel insights into vertebrate paleontology in Taiwan

    A scene in the Pleistocene of Taiwan based on vertebrate fossils from Tainan（Illustrated by C.-H. Sun）

    In this presentation, I will introduce our latest discoveries of vertebrate fossils and their large-scale evolutionary implications from Taiwan (Tainan, in particular). For example, we re-analyzed a fossil specimen found from Tainan while Taiwan was part of Japan, and then, for the first time, confirmed the existence of saber-toothed cats in Taiwan, entirely revising our understanding of paleo-ecosystem structure. Also from Tainan, we recognized the occurrence of large crocodylians, about 7 m long, in Taiwan. Further, this large crocodylian was endemic to Taiwan: Toyotamaphimeia taiwanicus. This discovery also resolves a biogeographic puzzle of the Toyotamaphimeia lineage. Taiwan accommodates more than 600 extant birds, but no avian fossils have been discovered ever since. We also documented the very first fossil bird in Taiwan based on a newly discovered fossil from Tainan, opening up an entirely new direction of paleontological research in Taiwan. In addition to our latest research progress on the well-known Mammuthus and Nesorhinus hayasakai from Tainan, vertebrate paleontology in Taiwan promises to offer large-scale perspectives, and this research field is worth more attention.

    Cheng-Hsiu Tsai Associate Professor

    Appointed at the Department of Life Science, National Taiwan University. After finishing the postdoctoral research at the National Museum of Nature and Science in Japan, I continue my long-term research on marine mammal evolution across the globe and then also include vertebrate fossils from Taiwan as another life-long project to emphasize their evolutionary implications and applications to conservation paleobiology.
